More tech jobs are opening up in Squamish and as companies either relocate their operations to Howe Sound, existing small businesses grow and require staff for specialized positions, or new startups emerge, the rec-tech sector is poised for growth. Training Innovation has teamed up with 7Mesh and VentureWeb for the first ever rech tech job fair in town.
The job fair will take place on July 10, Friday, at the Squamish Adventure Centre, from 10-2 pm.
Over nine companies will be at the Job Fair, representing 10-15 current job openings. Other companies present include VentureWeb, Marwick Marketing, Blurr, Base Technology Ltd, Anthill Films, and Sea to Sky Gondola.
Job ready candidates are encouraged to bring a targeted resume and references, said Naomi Dunaway, the coordinator for Training Innovations Inc.
“Those who aren’t yet ready to apply for a job but are curious about the industry are encouraged to come and talk with company representatives. The Job Fair is a great way to learn about what qualifications are desired and how you can build your skill set in preparation for that dream job,” he said.
There will be presentations by Anthill Films and Base Technology Ltd., and career experts from Training Innovations will be on hand to offer advice on job searching, resume feedback, and interview skills.
Dunaway said the benefits of working in the rec-tech sector are many: Often there is no formal training required and you can learn much of what you need to know online. The barrier to entry is low – at a minimum you just need access to a computer. Recreation technology is booming and average technical job incomes are higher than any other industry sector.
According to Business Vancouver’s recent BCTech issue, the average base salary for an Intermediate Software Developer is $71,000. As a bonus, many employers in the rec-tech industry understand the importance of work-life balance. Naturally, they attract active people who love to play outside and test their gear on the local trails.
