Conservation Officials Tight Lipped about Shooting Death of Bear at Squamish Landfill

September 6, 2014 12:32pm

Conservation officials remain tight lipped about an incident of a bear being shot at the local landfill.

The incident wasn’t mentioned in the regular media releases issued by Bear Aware or the conservation office. It came to light after a source alerted the Reporter about it.

Two people who stay around the landfill were witness to the killing. One evening a few weeks ago, both saw a man park his vehicle and walk to the landfill. They claim they saw the man looking through his gun scope and aiming at a bear who had wandered into the landfill. They heard gunfire and claim they saw the man drag the bear into the forest.

The story, if true, takes another disturbing twist. They claim the gunman, a poacher, dragged the bear into the forest and gutted it.

Sgt. Peter Busink of Conservation officer service said they have an officer investigating the file, but refused to reveal more information.

“Due to it being an active investigation, we cannot provide you with any other details at this time,” Busink said.

You can call the Conservation Officer Service to report all poachers and polluters 1-877-952 7277 (RAPP) Cellular Dial: #7277.
