“Mommy, what is time?” my two-and-a-half year old randomly asked me. I answered it as simply as I could but it got me questioning what I really think about time.
Snacktime, Storytime, Naptime, Playtime, Dinnertime Bathtime, Bedtime..
These are named to teach children that there are times for things in our day. We do not include the time in between these, however, the Rushed Time for most parents. Before children I could get out the door in less than a minute. Now it’s anywhere from 15-40 minutes. “I have to go pee”, “Her diaper smells stinky”, “Where are your socks?” “Where are your sisters’ pants? She just had them on!”, “I’m hungry!”
One day I was in a rush leaving the kids with my in-laws when my 4 year old stopped me, made my kneel down, and unzipped my sweater. At this point I’m a bit frustrated because I’m late. Then he kisses my chest very tenderly.
“I’m putting a kiss in your heart, Mommy” That was my gift and it was Timeless.
Children live in the moment, something most adults don’t. They have their own little clocks that are timeless and I am grateful they share them with me.
