BC Transit and the District of Squamish will be adding 1,300 new service hours this year to handyDART. The transit agency will also be adding a new ARBOC handyDART vehicle this spring to make better use of additional hours.
handyDART is an accessible transit service for people with permanent or temporary disabilities that prevent them from using conventional, fixed-stop transit. It provides door-to-door service, picking passengers up and dropping them off at accessible entrances at their destination.
To use the handyDART service, customers must first register by completing the form available at bctransit.com/squamish/riderinfo/handydart/register. Customers wishing to register may also be required to complete the Medical Verification form, available from the same webpage.
“Expanding service hours for the 463 people in Squamish who actively use handyDART will go a long way toward improving accessible transportation,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
Mayor Patricia Heintzman said expansion of this service ensures that barriers to employment, education, social and medical services and human connection are torn down, and the values of accessibility and inclusion are put first.
“Ensuring that transportation is accessible and reliable for all is key to building better, more inclusive communities.”
