Squamish RCMP seeks public’s help in finding fraudster

January 1, 2019 6:39am
Contact the police if you know or have seen this man.

Squamish RCMP has arrested one man and is seeking the public’s help in finding another man who fled after trying to defraud a local bank.

Squamish RCMP has arrested a man who attended a bank located in the 1800-block of Garibaldi Way and allegedly tried to withdraw $97,000 from an account that did not belong to him.

The man produced identification to the bank staff that did not match the account information. When police arrived, the man provided a false name.

A 57-year-old man was arrested for Fraud over $5000, Identity Theft, Uttering Forge Document and Obstruction for providing a fake name.

The Squamish RCMP immediately attended another financial institution where a similar incident was reported. The culprit of this fraud managed to flee the scene without receiving any money or being apprehended or questioned by the police.

Police is investigating and have released a photo of the man who allegedly attempted to commit this fraud.

Squamish RCMP is asking anyone who can identify this man to contact them, or their police jurisdiction.

As a result of numerous files being generated in our community, the Squamish RCMP is seeking any additional victims of similar incidents to come forward.

Similar files have been reported in Surrey, Langley, Richmond, Kelowna and Ontario. It appears that numerous accomplices may be working together committing these types of crimes and travelling throughout the Lower Mainland.

Squamish RCMP Staff Sergeant Jolaine Percival said it was the quick thinking of a bank employee prevented the fraud. “The nature of these offences are concerning and require a strong response. In this instance, the police and community came together to prevent further frauds from taking place,” she said.

If you have information regarding this offence, please contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or www.solvecrime.ca.
