District, SORCA announce bike camps

February 27, 2019 1:16pm

The District of Squamish and the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA) have announced SORCA Bike Camps, an ongoing series of day camps and programs to encourage youth aged six to 13 to develop mountain biking skills and gain confidence to ride.

The program piloted through 2018 and will launch in spring 2019.

SORCA Bike Camps will provide professional coaching, skills development, safety and education with a 5:1 child to instructor ratio.

SORCA has created a new Director of Youth Programming position to oversee the program in addition to youth rides and other youth-focused mountain biking initiatives.

The program was piloted in the summer and fall of 2018 during which approximately 100 riders participated.

“Riding a bike, is not just about physical fitness, it can benefit mental health, it’s a great social outlet, a fantastic form of transportation and is just plain fun,” says SORCA Vice President Melissa Sheridan.

“This is such a natural fit for many of our local youth and we are thrilled to partner with SORCA to further develop and deliver this program,” says District of Squamish Mayor Karen Elliott.

“It is our hope that this program will continue to foster rider confidence, leadership, friendships and inspire a new generation of riders.””

Program offerings include spring break and summer camps, after-school rides and school professional development day camps in the spring and fall. Participants will also learn about trail building, etiquette and conservation from the SORCA trail crew.

In addition, the program will include new ‘all-girls’ camps aimed at encouraging female youth riders to build confidence while challenging themselves in a fun, supportive, and safe environment.

All SORCA Bike Camps will be delivered by District of Squamish Recreation Services.

Funding for camp registration and equipment may be available through the Financial Access and Jumpstart programs for qualifying families.
