Sea to Sky Traffic Services put the brakes on two excessive speeders on Highway 99 last week, with one of them paying $701 in fines.
Both drivers will also have their vehicles impounded for a week, and they will have to pay those impounding costs as well.
In one instance, police stopped a vehicle traveling at 158 km/h in a posted 80 km/h speed zone just north of Squamish.
The driver produced a Class 7 licence and had four passengers in the vehicle, contrary to the conditions of his driver’s licence. The driver didn’t display “N” decal as required by law.
In addition, the vehicle was not equipped with winter tires, required by law on Highway 99 from October 1 to March 31.
The driver was issued tickets totalling $701 plus 6 driver penalty points. The vehicle was also impounded for seven days, with all associated costs.
In the second instance, an officer was working on Highway 99 near Furry Creek when he observed a northbound vehicle traveling well over the posted 80 km/h speed limit.
The officer confirmed the vehicle’s speed at 159 km/h using a laser speed measuring device. The driver was issued a $483 ticket for excessive speeding and three driver penalty points.
The vehicle was impounded for seven days, with all associated costs falling to the driver.
Police encourage motorists to obey speed limits, drive defensively, wear seatbelts, drive sober and distraction-free.
May is considered high risk for driving and motorists can expect to see police throughout the province focussing more attention on high risk driving behaviour, including excessive speed.
