Rescue underway for climbers stranded on Mount Tantalus

August 2, 2019 1:44pm

Squamish RCMP and Squamish Search and Rescue are working to rescue two climbers stranded on a section of Mount Tantalus in the Tantalus Range.

The couple were able to activate an emergency beacon yesterday at 3:40 pm.

Squamish RCMP have been working alongside Squamish Search and Rescue over the past 24 hours to assess a safe and successful extraction of both parties.

“Unfortunately weather is hampering efforts to rescue the climbers but Squamish SAR is in contact with both. The climbers are not injured but cold and wet from the weather last night” stated Sergeant Sascha Banks.

Squamish SAR lead said this was the second rescue in the last seven days on an extremely technical terrain. There is very limited access, and small mistakes can have life threatening consequences.

“A rescue response into this area is very difficult and one should be prepared to spend a significant amount of time prior to a rescue, sometimes this can take days,” the SAR lead said.
