Arterial roads, major collector roads, bus routes, police station, fire stations, ambulance stations, hills and safe routes to schools will be top snow removal priorities for the District of Squamish.
Secondary routes such as business areas, civic buildings and one access to homes comes next, followed by residential streets beginning with main roads and problem locations.
The district’s frontage and sidewalk maintenance bylaw also requires all owners and occupiers to clear snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property.
District crews widen the roads to clear storm drains, prevent flooding and ensure there is enough room for snow storage from additional snowfalls. During this process, the district says driveways may get filled in.
District suggests that residents can avoid that by piling snow to the right side of their driveway, when facing the road to prevent it from being pushed back onto your driveway by snow plows.
Transit routes and bus shelters are also snow clearing priorities, but the district is encouraging residents to visit the Squamish Transit website for up to date schedules and information, and to use NextRide to check the exact location of the bus.
The district owns three snow plow trucks as well as a snow clearing machine that is used for commuter trails, sidewalks and safe routes to school.
