A local Squamish mom braved snow and slush piles recently to donate 100 receiving blankets to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Labour and Delivery at Lions Gate Hospital.
Nikki Johnston Beaudoin delivered 126 blankets that were donated by local moms and the Bo and Ko. Kids Consignment Store in Squamish.
Nikki’s 16-week-old son Jake spent time in the NICU and she wanted to give something back to thank the nurses and doctors for the care she and her family received.
“I was so grateful for the amazing care and I wanted to do something to help the NICU,” she says.
Nikki, who moved to Squamish only four months ago, started talking to the local mom community online about her positive experience at the LGH.
Wanting to do something for the hospital, she emailed LGH asking if there is anything the intensive care unit needed.
“The consensus was that more fun, colourful receiving blankets were needed,” Nikki said.
Word quick spread online and Nikki is delighted by the positive response from local moms who encouraged the idea and donated receiving blankets for the NICU.
The local consignment store, Bo and Ko. Kids , was happy to donate more than a dozen blankets.
“There is a strong sense of mom community here and it really feels great to be part of such a network in Squamish,” she says.
Meanwhile, the staff at the Lions Gate Hospital is grateful for the blankets.
“A sincere thank you to everyone who donated and to Nikki, Carla Areny, Adriana Zupan and Bri Howard and all the volunteers who took the time to collect the donations,” LGH said.
