District is asking public to use caution and obey all posted signs as geotechnical drilling for a sea dike project begins next week in a downtown park.

The drilling will take place at the Xwu’nekw Park in Downtown Squamish.

The Xwu’nekw (pronounced Whoo-Nay-Oak) park is located on the Mamquam Blind Channel and Loggers Lane between Victoria and Main Streets.

The drilling will take place on Wednesday, February 26 and Thursday, February 27 for the proposed dike project, which will upgrade the shoreline to provide flood protection for Downtown Squamish.

Personnel will be on-site to direct the public away from the active work area, district says.

The public can expect significant impacts as construction proceeds with the use of cranes, pile drivers, excavators and trucks.

The district says it will strive to mitigate noise and community impacts during construction.

The new sea dike is a priority for district in order to meet the provincial standards for protecting the community from flood hazards.

The project’s main purpose is to provide flood protection, but water access with ramps and dock and an improved marine habitat are other benefits to the community, according to the district.
