School District 48 will close all playgrounds in the school district today until further notice, said Ian Currie, the director of operations.

Currie estimated that as many as ten playgrounds in the school district will be closed. Crews are posting signs today and cordoning off the playgrounds with caution tape.

Yesterday, the District of Squamish closed all playgrounds on municipal property to prevent children from potentially transmitting the COVID-19 virus.

District is also asking private strata playgrounds to follow suite and is urging citizens to respect this decision.

“As a parent I know this is very challenging,” said Mayor Karen Elliott on the closures.

“These efforts are required to be in place to keep our elderly family members and other vulnerable people safe. Self-discipline today is imperative to flatten the curve so that our health care system can keep up.”

The closures follow other municipalities who have taken this step.

In a recent press conference, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said parents should not let children have play dates and go onto playgrounds with other groups of children  as they can transmit the virus and bring it home.
