District of Squamish council will decide tomorrow on issuing a development permit for a R&D facility on Oceanfront Lands.

The building will house the Carbon Engineering Centre “Innovation Plant” for which the company received a $25 million loan from the federal government last year.

Carbon Engineering has pioneered technologies to capture and reuse carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.

This proposed R&D facility will be called the Newport Innovation Centre and will be located on the western part of the site.

An amendment is being sought from the council on earlier changes proposed in 2017.

Earlier, four buildings were proposed, but now only one new building is being planned. A reduction in building size and parking is also proposed.

Once functional, the Innovation Centre is expected to have up to 120 employees.

The R&D facility was approved by council in 2017 along with the Green Technology Centre on the Oceanfront Lands, which will be a four-storey concrete and glass building located only on the eastern part of the site.

The revised R& D building provides a modern industrial appearance and will set a precedent for future phases of development in this portion of Oceanfront.
