District of Squamish has installed a new 30 kilometre per hour school zone in the Garibaldi Highlands Elementary School area along The Boulevard.

The school zone is implemented between the two traffic circles and along the lower section of Perth where the volume of children before and after school is high, said Rachel Boguski, the communications coordinaor for the District of Squamish.

She said improving pedestrian safety in the area surrounding all elementary schools has been a priority of the district for some time and many improvements have been made, with more to come.

“Through community feedback and conversation calling for slower speeds on The Boulevard in the vicinity of the pedestrian crossings, the District has now added The Boulevard and lower Perth between the Boulevard and Paisley Place to the 30 km/hr school zone area,” she said.

Squamish RCMP has also been patrolling the area and raising awareness about the change.

“We were there to raise awareness, and at this stage most interactions will be awareness as the signage is new and will take knowledge of the decrease at first,” said Sgt. Sascha Banks.

She noted that there is only only two more weeks left for school, and the new sign would no longer be in effect until September.
