SORCA to ‘put some love’ into local trails with $50,000 grant

staff report
June 19, 2020 4:13pm

Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA) has received a $50,000 provincial grant for Diamond Head Network Revitalization.

SORCA will upgrade seven key trails in the destination trail network for mountain bikers and other users to enhance safety, accessibility and sustainability.

Helen Beynon, the executive director of SORCA, said the association was thrilled to receive funds from the province for this project.

Beynon said the funds were meant for Destination Trail projects,  the areas that bring riders from around the world, and see a lot of heavy use.

The funding would enable SORCA to “put some love” into some of Squamish’s very popular and frequently ridden trails.

Squamish’s trails were some of the most heavily utilized in the province and contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of the town, she said.

The funds will help cover the costs of some upgrades on Half Nelson and Pseudo-tsuga, and this new funding builds on the grants SORCA received from BC in 2018 to upgrade Half Nelson.

Funds will also contribute to small projects on other trails in the Diamond Head area, including Stl’lhalem Sintl’ (Climb Trail) and Meadow of the Grizzly.

“Our aim is to ensure that high-use trails are kept in great shape and safe for users,” Beynon said.

Squamish Chamber of Commerce and SLRD have also been given grants by the province to support economic development projects.

The province has granted $14 million to support over 150 projects in rural areas of BC.
