Bear encounter in Brackendale prompts warning

Staff report
June 21, 2020 10:05am

A concerning bear encounter in Brackendale has led to the district issuing a wildlife alert.

The Conservation Officer Service and district have issued a warning to trail users and residents in the vicinity of Jimmy Jimmy (Judd) Slough and Fisherman’s Park in the Brackendale neighbourhood.

The warning comes after reports of an encounter between a resident with a leashed dog and a black bear on Saturday, June 20. The encounter happened along the dike in that area.

Signage has been installed to alert the public to the presence of bears, but the trail network remains open.

Residents are asked to report wildlife sightings and encounters to the Conservation Officer Service 24/7 hotline: 1.877.952.7277

Here is a trail user’s guide to wildlife:

Be alert and aware: Anticipate wildlife sightings and watch for signs of fresh activity such as paw prints and scat, especially during the early morning and evening.

Avoid surprises: Make noise and use your voice to make your presence on the trails known.

Carry bear spray and know how to use it: Watch this video to learn how to use it safely.

Don’t take photos: Give wildlife their space and do not stop to view, photograph or feed them.

Back away: During a wildlife encounter, do not run or ride away, back up slowly and never turn your back to the animal.

Always leash your dog: Dogs must be on leash to avoid harassing wildlife and further contributing
