Splash park planned at Brennan Park

Staff report

A splash park in the next five years at the Brennan Park is one among the district’s short-term goals for the recreation centre.

It would cost anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million to build such a park, according to a staff report.

It could be located directly north or south of the Brennan Park, and a water recycling system could also be installed to reduce water waste, the report says.

District would prefer to locate it near parking and picnic areas and in a place that isn’t windy or where there is shade.

These considerations are part of a Brennan Park Fields and Land Master plan, which the council will discuss at a meeting on Tuesday, June 23.

A beach volleyball court, parks yard, parks office, and washrooms are all amenities envisioned as short-term goals by the district.

An indoor bike park, outdoor running tracks, event parking, outdoor theatre, bike skill park, a new multi-use sports field and an expanded Hendrickson field are some of the amenities planned in the long term at Brennan Park.

The district also plans to change campground use to support events only and move it to the existing equestrian area.

This change,  district says, will free up valuable space for new building and reduce potential conflict with residents of new housing subdivisions in the area.

Ultimately, the existing campground area would become sport fields in the long term.

In the future, Loggers Sports would also condense their footprint to core facilities, and adjust their business model to embrace arts, culture and events, and promote public access to the grounds outside of events as well.

The equestrian association is also investigating moving operations to the Legacy Lands or placing their indoor bubble at the south western corner of the Loggers Sport Grounds as a shared facility.

Meanwhile, private 0perators have submitted expressions of interest to build and operate an indoor sport field and an indoor bike park.

This is a brilliant idea that is long overdue. Some public washrooms would also be nice.
