District seeks public opinion on arts and culture strategy

Staff report
June 25, 2020 12:19pm

The District of Squamish is seeking the public’s input on local arts and culture as it moves towards creating the first Arts, Culture and Heritage Strategy.

There are 10 questions in the survey. An online survey, the district says, wasn’t its first choice but it is by far the safest method.

Those who wish to discuss the strategy or have questions for staff can email the district at arts@squamish.ca.

As many as 889 people responded to an earlier community survey on the arts and culture in Squamish.

As many as 60 per cent of people who took part in that survey felt community lacked enough events related to arts, culture and heritage.

Over 50 per cent of people surveyed said lack of facilities, insufficient funding, lack of awareness about funding and lack of meaningful events were the barriers to a vibrant arts and culture scene in town.

Live music, theatre, festivals, markets, public art and craft fairs were some of the top experiences people in Squamish said they would like to participate in.

The district has prepared a draft strategy and one goal it hopes to achieve in the next five to seven years is to create year-round events.

Collaborating with local youth and First Nations and promoting public art are some other goals.

After this latest round of survey, staff will present the Arts, Culture, and Heritage strategy before council. Once the council endorses it, the staff will begin implementing the recommendations.
