The family of a local woman fighting a complex cancer is seeking the community’s support for an expensive treatment that is not covered by BC Medical plan.

Rachel Kerr has launched a Go Fund Me page for her sister, Somerly Kerr, who was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in January this year.

Somerly has undergone chemotherapy and radiation and is now hoping to start immunotherapy.

“The immunotherapy treatment is a very expensive treatment and for us is not covered by BC medical plans. The cost is thousands of dollars monthly and can go on for 12 months,” Rachel says.

“The complex nature of this cancer has also limited Somerly’s mobility and now that she is home we need to adapt our home to help her get to and from the treatments. Unfortunately due to Covid-19, the government has put all applications for grants on hold until further notice,” Rachel says.

Rachel and Somerly were born and raised in Squamish, and their mother, Vicki Parford, has now taken a leave of absence to be Somerly’s full-time caregiver at their home in Squamish.

“Our family will stop at nothing to make sure Somerly gets the help she needs,” Rachel says.

“With all the costs adding up we are reaching out for any help you can give, whether it is donating, sharing this page or even sending love and thoughts to our family, any of these help in ways you couldn’t imagine. She continues to stay strong and from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you,” she says.
