Free local weekend transit announced for summer

staff report
July 14, 2020 2:59pm

BC Transit and the District of Squamish have announced free summer weekend transit service on all local routes starting this Saturday, July 18.

Free summer weekend service on all routes will run between July 18 and September 7, on Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays.

BC Transit will continue with many of the COVID-19 safety measures, and plans to implement more safety practices that align with BC’s Restart Plan.

BC Transit will continue to target a ‘comfortable capacity’ on buses, and is also encouraging customers to use face masks and to check NextRide for capacity.

Last month, district staff had recommended that council defer the free summer weekend transit program to 2021, but the plan was changed later.

The free summer transit program started last year in May, with the council supporting the service from June to September with financial support from the Sea to Sky Gondola.
