District of Squamish has identified two crown land parcels in the district for affordable housing.
The district is currently negotiating with the province on acquiring the land for affordable housing. However, the district isn’t saying where these land parcels are located.
“The District is not yet in a position to identify the location or details of these crown parcels until discussions with the province are concluded,” said Rachel Boguski, the communications coordinator.
The planning staff, however, continue to secure affordable rental housing options through development and rezoning applications.
This year, a consulting firm hired by the district is also working on creating the Squamish Housing Organization. The consultant will work on creating an overall governance structure, with the help and expertise of local non-profits.
Once the district has created a housing agency, it will work towards increasing the number of affordable housing options, from cottages to detached homes to town homes and apartments.
As part of its affordable housing strategy, the district also wants to create as many as 125 affordable purpose-built rentals by 2022.
