Squamish RCMP issued two violation tickets to people for illegal camping on the Spit Road.
On July 19, Squamish RCMP’s seasonal enforcement team patrolled Spit Road to enforce Wildlife Act Regulations, said Sgt. Sascha Banks of Squamish RCMP.
Banks said officers checked 14 vehicles, and issued two violation tickets for illegal camping.
Officers helped the illegal campers clear the area and gave them information on where they could camp in Squamish.
In a meeting on July 21, the council had voted 4-3 for third reading to a bylaw effectively banning camping anywhere in Squamish except on campgrounds.
District staff noted that there were low-cost campsites currently available, including reduced rates for the municipal campground.
The district is also doing an analysis of “sustainable policy options” for people living in vehicles, although recommendations won’t be put forward until this fall.
