Camper injured in bear attack near Lilloeet

staff report
August 13, 2020 3:17pm

The Conservation Officer Service says it responded to a bear attack near Lillooet on Sunday, where a camper was attacked by a sow and cub in his tent.

The incident happened at approximately 7 am in an isolated area on Mount McLean.

The man was with his dog and hiking partner when the victim woke up to a noise outside his tent. He tried to scare the bear away by yelling, but was attacked by the bear.

The victim and his friend were able to hike to an area to call for help and were picked up by a helicopter. He was  treated for serious injuries to his arm.

The COS Predator Attack Team flew to the attack site by helicopter as part of their investigation and have  determined that this was a surprise defensive attack.

The team has concluded that no efforts to capture the sow and cub will be made.
