Pemberton RCMP cleared of wrongdoing in case involving injured man

staff report
November 12, 2020 4:55pm

Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has cleared Pemberton RCMP of any wrongdoing following an investigation into an incident in Pemberton.

On November 9, at approximately 2 pm, Whistler RCMP detachment received a report expressing concern for the well-being of a man.

Officers attempted to locate the man but were unsuccessful.

The same day at about 3:25 pm, Pemberton RCMP received several calls from citizens about a man who appeared to be distressed and injured.

Officers found him at the salt shed on Duffy Lake Road, and took him into custody. Emergency Health Services  provided treatment and took him to hospital.

Police later confirmed that the man found in Pemberton was in fact the same man for whom Whistler RCMP had been called earlier.

In an interview with police watchdog, the man confirmed that police did not cause any of his injuries and that police didn’t use any force against him while taking him into custody.

The IIO’s Chief Civilian Director reviewed the evidence – including medical information and statements from the affected person and another independent witness – and determined that the man’s injuries were not caused by Pemberton RCMP officers.

The investigation has now been concluded.
