Invest more in covered spaces during COVID-19, locals tell district

staff report
November 21, 2020 12:43pm

A majority of people polled in a District of Squamish budget survey say the district should invest more in covered areas during the pandemic.

As many as 57.79% of people say the district should “Plan for and invest in outdoor covered areas for neighbourhood connectivity and public space activation.”

DOS conducted an online survey between October 30 and November 15, inviting residents to share their priorities with council and staff for the 2021 budget and its five-year financial plan.

The survey garnered as many as 251 responses. The results are being compiled and will be presented to the council in an upcoming meeting.

As part of the surveys, the district also asked what the community would like the district to do more, do less, or continue doing the same.

The community also wants the district to do more to help promote ‘Buy Local’ Campaigns.

As many as 54.50% people surveyed said they would like the district to do more to help promote ‘Buy Local’ campaigns.

59.67 % of those who answered the survey said the district should advocate to the province or the federal government for rapid testing at air and land borders in BC to help support the recovery of tourism.

63.3% people say the district should do less to encourage visitors to town, while 40.99% say they want more COVID-19-friendly recreation program offerings, but in smaller groups and outdoor covered spaces.
