BC Hydro scales back planned power outages downtown

Staff report
December 5, 2020 10:13am

BC Hydro has agreed to scale back the planned power outages at a seniors building in Downtown Squamish.

Power outages were earlier planned for ten hours on December 10 for the Cedars building on the Third Avenue building.

However, the company has now reduced the outages to just two hours after residents and the executive director, Laura Modray, raised their concerns.

This outage is now expected to take place for two hours, from 9 am to 11 am.

Modray said several senior residents were concerned that they would have to spend ten hours in the cold, and be forced to leave their homes in a pandemic.

“The seniors at the Cedars are very appreciative of BC Hydro’s efforts to minimize the impact of this system upgrade. Thanks BC Hydro for listening and responding to the concerns of our tenants,” Modray said.

Scott Mora of BC Hydro said the outage is necessary to improve the system to ensure reliable power can be delivered.

“If we leave this work, it could result in an unplanned outage due to equipment failure, and that would mean no warning and likely a much longer outage for our customers,” she said.

Meanwhile, power outages are also planned for homes on Perth Drive, Pia Road and Torbet Place in Garibaldi Highlands. Power will be out on December 8 for some homes in the area from 9 am to 11 am.

Outages are also planned for December 13 and 15 in Paradise Valley and Furrey Creek.
