Local citizens foiled two attempts by fraudsters to scam them online.
On January 3, a citizen reported that he clicked on a suspicious link while playing Roblox.
A hacker then claimed to have accessed the complainant’s Paypal account and threatened to ‘swat’ him.
The complainant changed his passwords and notified Paypal and gaming administrators to prevent any fraudulent transactions from his accounts.
Attempted phone scam
Between December 30 and 31 last month, a citizen reported a phone scam where a caller disguised as working for the Bank of Montreal and told the resident they needed to make a credit card payment.
The citizen was smart enough to ask the caller to verify information, which the scammer was not able to provide.
The complainant contacted the bank who confirmed they do not use 1-888 numbers to contact clients, and that the scammer may have recorded the bank’s automated greetings.
