Council changes criteria for operating Short Term Rentals

Following a council meeting on December 8, district staff has revised the minimum requirements for operating Short Term Rentals in Squamish. .

The STR operators must live full time on the subject property for a minimum of nine months in a year.

Staff has also removed the minimum requirement that operators demonstrate a prior rental history, opening up eligibility to residents who have not previously operated an STR.

According to a staff report, district has also now removed the minimum TUP requirement for building occupancy permit. However, staff has added a minimum requirement that no more than one dwelling unit be used for rentals per property.

Staff has also added a minimum requirement that properties with a residential childcare facility will not be considered.

District of Squamish will allow 30 Short Term Rentals in basement suites and coach homes in Squamish in 2021, and will soon advertise the applications.

If more than 30 applications are received and short-listed, each application will be independently ranked against the specified evaluation criteria.

Eligible STRs will be evaluated and assigned cumulative scores across seven evaluation criteria, with a total score of 100 points.

Short-term rental frequency, parking provision, complaints history, neighborhood input, are some of the evaluation criteria’s.
