A Vancouver-based Jewish organization wants the District of Squamish to proclaim January 27 as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
In a letter to council, Ezra S. Shanken, the CEO of Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver, says it is critical that communities take a moment to mark this day.
“The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver has been funding the small but mighty Jewish community of Squamish for the last number of years and it made me think that now would be a nice time for you to pass a proclamation of your own,” he said.
“We must in these moments when populism is on the rise remind our communities where wed can lead.”
The Jewish Federation of Vancouver funds a program in Squamish that aims to connect Jewish children to Jewish culture, and traditions.
The Connect Me In initiative is an outreach initiative of Jewish Federation that develops and delivers programs for individuals and families who live in the regional communities outside the City of Vancouver – over half the Metro Vancouver Jewish population.
The program, for ages 7 to 13, provides fun introduction to Jewish culture and traditions.
