Squamish Historical Society is honoring the memory of late council watcher Terrill Patterson with a Terrill Patterson scholarship.

The scholarship will be given annually to a Howe Sound Secondary School graduate beginning this May.

“Thanks to the community of Squamish, we have raised over $1200 through collecting empties at the Squamish Bottle Depot” says SHS President, Bianca Peters.

“Terrill was known for recycling cans and bottles so it’s fitting that the money was raised by recycling.”

A special account for the Terrill Patterson Memorial Award has been created at Squamish Savings and the Squamish Bottle Depot will be collecting donations for the next five years.

This year’s inaugural Terrill Patterson Award will be in the amount of $250. The criteria is as follows:

  • Applicants must have attended public school in Squamish for at least five years including attending Howe Sound Secondary for the past three years
  • Applicants should outline how they embody the ideals and values that were important to Terrill, including involvement in politics and the environment
  • Applicants must demonstrate excellence in service
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated interest in local history
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are member of or are involved with the LGBTQ+ or neuro-diverse communities
  • Proof of registration at any type of Canadian post-secondary training institution is required
  • May be deferred for one year upon written request to the donor

“We miss seeing Terrill riding his bike through the community and listening to his views on local politics. It’s our wish that his legacy will help support future generations meet their goals” says Bianca Peters.

The SHS also offers a joint Don Behrner Scholarship for $750 in partnership with the Squamish Fire Fighters Association.

Don was the Vice President of the SHS when he passed away and had been an active Fire Chief of SFFS.
