The Canada Border Services Agency has seized 17,852.5 litres of a substances used in date rape drug with an estimated street value of over $1.8 million.
The analysis by investigators have confirmed that the substance seized was gamma-butyrolactone, a controlled substance also known as ‘GBL’.
It is prohibited under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act, and is essential to the production of other controlled substances, such as “date-rape” drugs.
On February 8, 2021, the Pacific Region Intelligence Section, with assistance from the National Targeting Centre, identified a container of interest, and referred it for examination.
Border Services Officers from Metro Vancouver Marine Operations examined the container and collected samples from multiple drums.
These samples were sent to the CBSA’s Contraband Drug Analysis Section in Ottawa, which confirmed the substance.
“We are committed to safeguarding our country and stopping contraband goods, such as narcotics, from reaching our communities,” CBSA said.
The investigation into the importers is ongoing.
