Porteau Cove wildfire is now under control

Staff report
May 25, 2021 9:35am

The Porteau Cove wildfire is now under control.

The fire was brought under control by 5 pm on Sunday, said Dorthe Jakobsen, Fire Information Officer at the Coastal Fire Centre.

In wildfire terminology, a fire is ‘under control’ when it has received sufficient suppression action to ensure no further spread of the fire.

Fire crews will continue to monitor and patrol the area until confident that it is completely out, she said.

Wildfire Service had two crews and a helicopter bucketing the area to bring the fire under control. “We will be monitoring and patrolling the fire until we are confident it is out,” she said.

The fire started around 6 pm on Saturday, and was less than two hectares in area with an approximate location at Porteau Road off ramp.

Jacobson said it is suspected the fire was human caused although that is under investigation.
