Historic Ferry Building in West Van to be moved over two days

Staff report
June 2, 2021 8:15am

The Ferry Building in West Van will be moved to make way for a new foundation and raise the building to protect it from rising flood levels due to the impacts of climate change.

The move will be a slow and steady process over Wednesday, June 2 and Thursday, June 3.

The federal and provincial governments are investing in restoring the 108-year-old Ferry Building, a cherished landmark that now operates as a public art gallery near the waterfront in Ambleside.

The restoration work began in May and is scheduled to be complete in spring 2022.

The Ferry Building is a municipally designated heritage site and cannot be altered unless a Heritage Alteration Permit is issued.

On February 22, 2021, Council approved the Heritage Alteration Permit to allow restoration of the Ferry Building.

Eight parking spots beside the Ferry Building Gallery will be closed throughout the construction phase of the project to accommodate the construction activity.

Traffic and pedestrian flow, as well as other parking disruptions to the north of the gallery on Argyle Avenue, will occur intermittently during construction activity.
