The President of the Paradise Valley Leaseholders Association is urging the District of Squamish and SLRD to work together to maintain a section of Paradise Valley Road that needs urgent attention.

“On behalf of all of the residents who live along this section of road, we ask you all to please make this a priority,” Jennifer Smack, the president of the association, said in a letter to the district.

According to Smack, approximately one-kilometre section of Paradise Valley Road which falls under SLRD is in dire condition and in need of a collaboration for regular road maintenance.

“This road serves as recreation access to Starvation Lake, Pilchuck Lake, Butterfly Lake, is used primarily by the residents of Squamish, but also frequented for “free camping” by many people from Vancouver and Squamish,” she said.

However, she said, the section of road received only two gradings per year.

“It is long overdue that maintenance of this section of Paradise Valley Road becomes a shared financial responsibility of all parties using the road. The road is in terrible condition most of the year,” she said.

The DOS boundary ends at the Jack Webster Bridge, but Smack wants the district to work with SLRD on road maintenance.

“Your grader stops at the Jack Webster Bridge, but our road, which is access to outdoor recreation and the Sea to Sky Trail, is primarily utilized by the citizens of Squamish. It is time for the DOS to collaborate with the SLRD in maintenance of this 1 kilometre section of road,” she wrote.

“The PVLA would like to see the DOS begin to contribute towards the maintenance of the SLRD section of road, as this half kilometre or so stretch of road is also “the end of the road”, literally. The fact that this small section is in the SLRD should really be irrelevant, as it is mostly Squamish residents that come here to recreate.”

Jennifer hit the nail on the head. “THE SECTION of ROAD is in THE SLRD”. The taxpayers of Squamish funds STOP at our boundary line in this case it’s at the Jack Webster Bridge.

Jennifer should be expressing her concerns to the SLRD office in Pemberton and NOT Squamish Council.

The SLRD can hire a private contractor to grade the road for example, Miller Capilano Maintenance Corporation. Miller Cap grades Mamquam Road from the District of Squamish boundary up to the Garibaldi Park access for the SLRD.

The District of Squamish has more than enough roadways to maintain than they can handle.

Jennifer and the other residents chose to live out in the boonies unfortunately potholes go along with gravel roads.
