The United Way of Lower Mainland, and the Hi Neighbour initiative in Squamish is organizing Squamish’s first Jane’s Walk in a COVID-safe way from June 12-19, from 10 am to 3 pm.
Jane’s Walk is a worldwide movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs, an American-born writer and activist best known for her writings about the city.
The walk begins and ends at Junction Park in Downtown Squamish.
The self-guided “Walk, Wander and Wonder” is aligned with a food security theme.
Participants need to sign up on the squamish.Eventbrite.com link to receive the self-guided package by email with the route details. Registration is free and open to everyone.
The map and route details will be sent to registered participants by June 12.
The Self-Guided Tour includes a downtown walking route with points of interest, shared stories about local food solutions and fun facts about food. Those who attend can also complete a postcard to win prizes.
“Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with neighbours,” said Kim Winchell of the United Way of the Lower Mainland.
“The Squamish Jane’s Walk comes at the time when we’re recognizing food security issues in the Sea to Sky Corridor as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to inform and inspire the community about what’s growing and what’s challenging relative to the local food system in downtown Squamish.”
