District applies for dock in downtown park

Staff report
June 14, 2021 11:16am

District of Squamish has submitted an application to the Minister of Transportation to approve construction work at the Xwu’nekw Park Sea Dike in Downtown Squamish.

The district plans to install a new gangway and dock for public access to water. Also planned are 200-metre-long sheet pile sea dike along the high water mark, and rip-rap berm along the base of the sheet pile wall.

The float would enable hand-launching of kayaks, surf-skis, stand-up paddleboards and canoes, the district says.

According to the application, the construction will be “in, on, over, under, through or across” the Mamquam Blind Channel in Downtown Squamish between Victoria St. and Main St. on Lot A, District Lots 7056 and 486 in front of 37956 Loggers Lane.

The work is part of a detailed sea dike design for the Xwu’nekw Park (pronounced Whoo-Nay-Oak) Sea Dike, which will upgrade the shoreline to provide flood protection for Downtown Squamish.

The park is located on the Mamquam Blind Channel and Loggers Lane between Victoria and Main Streets.

Upon finalized design, the district will start obtaining provincial and federal approvals for the dike and public float.

Those who wish to comment can do so in writing (NPPPAC-PPNPAC@tc.gc.ca) and although all comments will be considered, no individual response will be sent.
