Warning after cougar seen near Garibaldi park campsite

Staff report
July 5, 2021 1:13pm

BC Parks is warning the public after a cougar was seen at a campsite at Garibaldi Provincial Park.

“A cougar was spotted near the Singing Creek campsite on July 1st. Always carry bear spray and be knowledgeable about wildlife activity in the areas you are visiting,” BC Parks said in an update.

“Please remember it is everyone’s responsibility to store food and essentials appropriately in the backcountry. Do not be the reason why a cougar or bear is destroyed.”

The Cheakamus Lake trail is now open, but Cheakamus Lake and Singing Creek campsites remain closed due to flooding.

The trail to Helm Creek via Cheakamus Lake is also open, and the campsite at Helm Creek is open.

As of July 1, BC Parks won’t be supplying toilet paper to backcountry locations in the Sea to Sky Corridor.
