Lillooet area wildfire likely human-caused

Staff report
July 9, 2021 12:34pm

The wildfire at McKay Creek, 11 kilometres north of Lillooet, is suspected to be human-caused but is under investigation.

There are 165 personnel, 15 helicopters and 20 pieces of heavy equipment battling the wildfire, according to an update by the BC Wildfire Service on July 8.

The wildfire service will continue to establish control lines and develop containment plans. It plans to contain the growth on the east side of the Fraser River by establishing fire guards with heavy equipment with a goal to limit impacts to infrastructure.

Crews continue to mop-up along the West Pavilion and danger-tree assessment and falling is ongoing along the West Pavilion Road system.

Above the community of Pavilion, the containment lines are holding, and crews continue to mop-up the area.

Today, Parks Canada is sending 23 highly trained wildland fire management specialists to BC.

The specialists will be in BC for two weeks.
