The Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association is inviting the community to enjoy the Squamish Mural Walk – a free, year-round self-guided tour of over 20 murals in Downtown Squamish which includes new and existing murals.
“A mural can create belonging and a sense of pride, reduce graffiti and tagging, and allow neighbourhoods to shape their community through beautification,” says Kerry Neil, the executive director of DSBIA.
On the weekend of August 6 to 8, there will be seven new mural installations painted during the ‘Big Paint Weekend’, bringing together a diversity of artists and adding to the existing murals which date back to 2000.
The best way to explore the murals in Downtown Squamish is by simply taking a stroll. DSBIA welcome everyone to come by the tent at Junction park over the August 6-8 weekend from 9 am to 4 pm daily to pick up a map of the mural locations.
People can then take a walk around downtown and experience the diversity, culture, history and heritage of Squamish at their own pace while tagging #squamishmuralwalk and #downtownsquamish with all their favourite artists.
The lineup of new mural artists this year is : Olivia Di Liberto @chillivia Atheana Picha @atheanapicha Sioban Joseph @siobhanjoseph11 Would be Nude Not to @wouldbenudenotto Nat Nuke @nattuke.art Alex Stewart @enlifestudio Alex Fowkes @alexjfowkes.
The Squamish Mural Walk recognizes that these murals are produced on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish People, particularly the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.
After the ‘Big Paint Weekend’, maps will be available from a number of downtown businesses. Please visit squamishmuralwalk.com for more information, and follow @downtownsquamish on Instagram and Facebook for more information.
