Heat record broken in Squamish

Staff report
August 13, 2021 3:24pm

Yesterday was another record-setting hot day in Squamish.

According to a weather summary released by Environment Canada, Squamish set a record for daily maximum temperature at 40.2 C.

The old record was from 1992, when Squamish recorded 33.5 C.

Records have been kept in the area since 1960.

Squamish was the hottest community in the entire BC, followed by Abbotsford, which also sizzled at 39 C.

According to Environment Canada, the temperature records reported here have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record.

Port Alberni, White Rock, Pitt Meadows, Hope, and Agassiz were among other communities where heat records were broken.

High temperatures forecast for tomorrow are anticipated to continue until Sunday, with daytime highs ranging from 32 to 35 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows of 17 to 19 degrees Celsius.

Humidex values during this period will reach the high 30’s.
