Justin Trudeau has announced that a re-elected Liberal government will move forward with $10 a day child care to make life more affordable for Canadian families.
Too many families in Canada lack access to affordable, inclusive, and high-quality child care, the Liberal party said in a press release. The global COVID-19 pandemic has also made it clear that without access to child care, parents – especially women – cannot fully participate in the economy. That’s why Patrick Weiler and Justin Trudeau are going to continue to build a Canada-wide early learning and child care system to ensure every child in Canada, no matter where they live, has the chance to achieve their potential, the party stated in the press release.
“The number of young families in our riding is growing, and a lot of young families in our riding need access to affordable daycare. Our plan is there to help them out by ensuring costs are low and spaces are there when they are needed,” said Weiler, the MP for West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea to Sky.
A re-elected Liberal government will support Canadian parents by:
● Reducing fees for child care by 50 per cent in the next year;
● Delivering $10 a day child care within five years everywhere outside of Quebec; and
● Working with the province of Quebec to build on its world-class, affordable child care system, improve working conditions for educators, and create more spaces for families.
This builds on the work that the Liberals have already done to make life more affordable for Canadian families since 2015, including:
● Cutting taxes for the middle class by raising them on the wealthiest one per cent;
● Giving more money to nine out of 10 Canadian families and helping lift more than 400,000 kids out of poverty with the Canada Child Benefit;
● Creating approximately 40,000 additional child care spaces; and
● Signing $10 a day child care agreements with British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, Newfoundland and Labrador, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and strengthening Quebec’s existing early learning and child care system.
The press release claimed Conservatives won’t create a single child-care space for families right here in West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country while the Liberals are determined to support a Canada-wide early learning and child-care system that will not only support working parents and make life more affordable for families, it will also create jobs, strengthen economy, and grow the middle class.
