BC Parks confirms another rockfall at the Chief last Friday

BC Parks has confirmed that a slab of rock dislodged from the face of the Stawamus Chief Massif.

The rockfall happened on Friday, September 10, at approximately 4:45 pm, said David Karn, media relations for the ministry.

“The rock fall occurred at the Grand Wall within the area that was closed previously following the first Grand Wall rock fall in June,” Karn said.

No injuries were reported.

“The RCMP and the local climbing community were notified to advise their membership to use extra caution in the area,” Karn added.

The area remains closed and BC Parks will continue to monitoring the situation.

Several areas of the Stawamus Chief have been closed since July after significant rock fall events.

BC Parks has undertaken two geotechnical surveys of rockfall in Stawamus Chief Park.

“We will continue to perform these surveys after events and follow the suggested recommendations. Rockfall is extremely difficult to predict and the last two events are thought to have occurred for different reasons,” Karn told Squamish Reporter last month.
