VPD researches have analyzed the crime data of last year and found a concerning trend: Over four people a day are the target of a random, unprovoked assaults in Vancouver.
From September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021, there were approximately 1,555 unprovoked stranger assaults involving 1,705 victims.
VPD defines “unprovoked stranger” as someone who has no previous relationship with the victim.
The initial interactions were brief, from 0 to 15 seconds, and the incident was unreasonable given the circumstances.
According to VPD, 47% involved weapons ranging from blunt objects to a firearm and 28% of the suspects appeared to be living with mental illness.
As many as 24% of the victims were female
The majority of victims were simply going about their day, running errands, out walking, or visiting the city.
For example, an erratic and violent male started to randomly assault several people waiting at a bus stop at Main St and Terminal Ave.
During the arrest, one of the officers suffered a broken arm and the male bit the other officer. Both officers required medical treatment.
The number of these assaults is alarming, says VPD.
“We will be working within our resources and looking at innovative solutions to improve public safety,” the service said.
