BC Parks cautions about backcountry skiing at Garibaldi Provincial Park

Staff report
December 20, 2021 11:05am

Popular backcountry ski touring areas in Garibaldi Provincial Park require advanced skills, advanced planning and good weather conditions, cautions BC Parks.

These areas include the Garibaldi Neve Traverse, Singing Pass and the Spearhead-Fitzsimmons Traverse.

“Consider parking, access to trailheads and lifts, backcountry access routes, required safety equipment, training and trip planning prior to travel,” says BC Parks.

Skiers and snowboarder re-entering Whistler Blackcomb ski area boundaries from the backcountry are also being asked to check in with Patrol (604-905-2324) for up-to-date avalanche conditions and terrain closures

Elfin Lakes Shelter in the Diamond Head area remains closed until further notice due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and is also unavailable for reservations on Discover Camping.

In the meantime, winter camping is allowed at the Elfin Lakes campground, but site must be reserved online in advance at discovercamping.ca.

BC Parks also warns that parking lots and trails at Alice Lake Provincial Park are not maintained in the winter. “Frozen lakes are extremely dangerous and ice thickness is not monitored. We recommend staying off the ice. Proceed onto lake at your own risk,” warns BC Parks.
