District bid seeks cycling, pedestrian route design in Downtown Squamish

Staff report
January 15, 2022 12:00pm

The District of Squamish has launched a bid for preliminary designs for cycling and pedestrian routes in Main Street and Third Avenue.

The District completed an Active Transportation Plan in 2016 that guides the development of the District’s cycling and pedestrian networks.

Main Street and Third Avenue downtown were identified as future protected bike routes and areas that require adequate pedestrian space.

According to the bid documents, a single preliminary design is required for

Main Street from Cleveland Ave to Third Avenue

Third Avenue from Bailey Street to Pemberton Avenue

Third Avenue from Main Street to Vancouver Street

Two designs are also required for Third Avenue from Pemberton Avenue to Main Street.

“The overall objective of this project is to develop preliminary designs and cost estimates that will inform future capital and development projects,” according to the  bid documents.

The designs will also inform the development of the District’s Downtown Streetscape Standards.

The District says it is gradually working to build new bike and pedestrian routes through new developments and capital projects.  In 2018, the District changed setback requirements for Third Avenue. The purpose of this change was to provide additional space for active transportation.

For Third Avenue between Pemberton and Main Street, the District requires an interim design that could be implemented before development. It plans to start work on the project this year.
