Police arrest woman after group blocks traffic on highway near Horseshoe Bay

Staff report
January 26, 2022 11:41am

One person was arrested today after a small group of protestors attempted to impede traffic on Hwy 1. The protests were organised by Save Old Growth, who are demanding an end to old growth logging in the province.

Just before 8 am, a group of ten protestors gathered on the highway near Caulfeild at Exit 4, holding banners and using vehicles to block westbound traffic, police says.

After being asked to disperse by officers, all but one woman moved off the highway.

The woman was arrested for obstructing the roadway and transported to cells where she is awaiting a bail hearing. Westbound traffic was blocked for approximately 10 mins as a result of the gathering.

The group has said its campaign will continue and the frequency and scale of actions will escalate until all old growth logging is stopped. The government has an option to fulfill its election promises or send nonviolent people on the motorways to jail, the group added.
