District restarts work on Mamquam Road sewer upgrades

Staff report
March 15, 2022 10:05am

District of Squamish crews have restarted work on the Mamquam Road upgrades, which will take place in phases over the next few months.

Sidewalk and bike path improvements are anticipated to be complete by June, depending on the weather. Please expect parking disruptions (some parking will always be available), minor traffic disruptions, and construction noise.

Crews will also complete some deficiency work between Government Road and Highway 99 in April, while work on the new sewer line underneath Highway 99, east to Glenalder Place will also continue this year.

The Mamquam Road sewer line project was delayed following two unsuccessful drilling attempts during which the drilling machine encountered obstructions deep underneath the middle of Highway 99.

These obstructions, the District says, likely include large trees or boulders, the removal of which would have required a large and lengthy excavation which was not an option at the time.

The project team is considering alternative piping methodologies in order to mitigate the risk of hitting logs/boulders and completing this section of the sewer replacement.
