Increase in break-ins, thefts prompt Squamish RCMP warning

Staff report
March 23, 2022 5:09pm

Squamish RCMP are warning the community after a recent increase in property crime in Squamish.

Between March 19 and 22, Squamish has had a crime spree with break-ins and theft from vehicles and homes reported in both residential and business areas. Suspects primarily target unlocked vehicles parked on streets, driveways, or parking lots during the overnight hours.

Police have linked the majority of their investigations to a suspect who recently left Squamish. However, police believe this person may be returning without detection to commit further crime.

Police have enhanced car and foot patrols to both deter and catch thieves.

“Most of these crimes are preventable,” says Corporal Angela Kermer of the Squamish RCMP.  “Looking at our information, the majority of thefts from auto happen to cars that are unlocked with valuables easily visible.”

Squamish RCMP reminds residents of two things.  First, secure cars, leave no valuables or keys inside, install lighting and security systems where possible, remove garage door openers, and have neighbors look out for each other.  Second, report any suspicious activity to police, as every piece of information gathered may help connect suspects to the crimes.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or go to the http://www.solvecrime.ca
