The District of Squamish plans to amend the Single Use Items Reduction Bylaw to include single use non-plastic straws.
In February 2022, the District approved the Squamish Single Use Items Reduction Bylaw, which banned single use plastic bags, and regulated polystyrene containers, plastic utensils, stir sticks, and straws.
The new bylaw amendment being proposed clarifies that single use non-plastic straws may be provided to a customer if requested. The original bylaw did not clearly articulate this.
The District will delete “Single-use Straw” and replace it with “Single Use Non-plastic Straw,” which means a single use straw made with a material other than plastic (e.g., paper) that is designed or intended for a single-time use.
The bylaw mentions that a business is not prevented from providing an Accessible Straw to a person with disabilities or due to medical reasons.
