Two bear attacks in Squamish estuary prompt trail closure

The yellow marks the location of the barricades installed by the District of Squamish.
Staff report
November 3, 2022 2:34pm

Two bear attacks in Squamish Estuary have prompted immediate closure of the trail network. Trail network will remain closed until further notice to give space to bears and ensure public safety, said the District of Squamish.

The trail network was closed following two separate surprise attacks involving individuals and a sow with a cub. Both incidents occurred on the morning of Thursday, November 3. COS officers are investigating the situation and District  crews and RCMP members have worked to close the estuary and keep public out.

Barricades and signage have been placed at all entrances to keep the public from entering, and the public is asked to respect the closure for their own safety. The closure will be in place until further notice.

Please report any wildlife sightings and encounters to the Conservation Officer Service 24/7 hotline: 1.877.952.7277. Further information will be shared as more details are available.
